Kanjivaram silk sarees are eternal and a timeless weave from Tamil Nadu. These sarees have a sense of royalty and elegance. The lustrous drapes of Kanjivaram silk sarees are made special by its use of pure and real zari and unique thick borders.  It is no wonder, brides often choose this luxurious saree for their big day. These statement sarees are made using yarn from silkworms, making it pure, ensuring a long life for saree. It is no wonder, many of us have our mothers and relatives’ age-old sarees preserved in pristine condition and still with years ahead of them. They never truly go out of vogue either as they are an heirloom which is meant to be passed on from one generation to the other, making the use of pure zari and silk important. In the past, these sarees were chosen by elite and royal for special occasion owing to its heritage, luxury and design.

Almost all Kanjivaram silk sarees we have spotted seems to be unique and different from the other. With a wide range of designs and stories within each of these luxurious sarees, it makes for perfect bridal outfits especially with the zari brocades in elaborate intricately woven designs.

We cannot stop drawing inspiration from the Deepika-Ranveer wedding held in Italy, last year November. The lush close-knit wedding affair in Lake Como was what dreams are made of. Each picture dripping with love and happiness, one could not stop looking at the pictures multiple times to draw inspiration. For the Konkani style wedding, Deepika wore a rich Kanjivaram silk saree from Bengaluru-based design label, Angadi Galleria, which was gifted to her by her mother following traditions. The designer revealed it took over 45 days to weave this beautiful Kanjivaram saree which was selected by Padukone and her mother. The way Deepika highlighted Kanjivaram silk sarees for her Konkani ceremony brought it back to the fore for its much-revered elegance and royalty. The actress completed her look with smoky eyes, nude lips and she paired it with some heavy traditional jewellery.

To kick-start their celebrations in India, the couple held a reception in the bride’s hometown, Bengaluru. Deepika wore a gold brocade sari from Angadi Galleria with a full-sleeved ivory blouse styled by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The saree was woven over 60-days, the designer said. Deepika highlighted traditional heirloom yet again and looked like the perfect bride in the metallic gold brocade sari which she paired with emerald earrings, choker and a pearl necklace. For a pop of colour, she chose red lips, shimmering highlighter and Mogras for her hair.

2. Revisiting old memories

After meeting on the sets of a movie, dating for over eight years, Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Goa back in 2017. The destination wedding was a bash with both a Hindu wedding and a white wedding before concluding in Hyderabad. For the Hindu wedding, the Telugu actress wore an heirloom Kanjivaram silk saree which belonged to her fiance's grandmother, D Rajeshwari. The saree was an ode to her and held sentimental value to the families. She accessorised the well-preserved gold and ivory saree with custom-made gold jewellery including waist belt and armbands. The vintage saree was accentuated with a red embroidered blouse, it all made her look like the perfect bride. We are especially in awe of the well-captured and raw pictures which managed to highlight their emotions so very well. The bride and groom were both glowing with happiness.

3. Virat & Anushka’s fairy-tale wedding

After their fairy-tale wedding in Tuscany, Italy, which took social media by a story, Virat and Anushka continued the celebration with a lavish reception in Delhi where the couple gave us outfit goals, yet again.  All decked-up in one fo the finest traditional red and gold Kanjivaram silk sarees designed by the master of weaves Sabyasachi with a heavy palla and Jadau jewellery. The newly-wed actress paired her saree with a neatly-tied bun and Gajra. We could not help but notice the prominent Chura and sindoor in place. Among the sea of prominent figures, the Prime Minister, Modi too graced the couple at the grand event. This is the perfect outfit for one’s reception or even an engagement ceremony.

4. Rekha’s signature look

How could we have an entire post about celebs and Kanjivarams and not mention Rekha? Her love for Kanjivarams has made the saree an iconic choice of grace and beauty. Year-after-year, if there is an actress who has always carried off these luxurious drapes with style and elegance, it is Rekha. So, when we saw this picture of Rekha at Akash Ambani and Shloka Mehta’s engagement in Mumbai in a luscious Kanjivaram silk saree, we could not help but feature it. With red lips, statement neck-piece and a thick line of Gajra, Rekha has styled this quintessential piece so well.  

Kanjivaram silk sarees may be a thing from the past, but they are far from running out of trend. It is a traditional piece which will always remain in fashion and is an essential piece that every bride must have in her trousseau. You could also always reuse this saree and also convert it into a lehenga, suit and anything else. With its luscious sheen, luxuries heavy drapes and intricate zari work, they make for the perfect bridal outfit, highlighting our heritage and accentuating the bride's features.
