In 2017, the state made it mandatory to solemnise a marriage especially to protect women and their rights. A marriage can be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and Special Marriage Act, 1994. Before applying for marriage registration in UP, there are two conditions that need to be fulfilled by the couple.

  1. The bride needs to be above the age of 18 and the groom should be 21 or above to get married.

Marriage registration in UP is a long process that requires many documents and identity proofs. Below is a list of all the documents you need to carry with you while going to apply for a marriage certificate.

  1. Marriage registration Application forms
  2. Affidavit in the prescribed format
  3. Age proof of the Groom and Bride – Birth certificate or Mark Sheet
  4. Address Proof – Ration card, Voter ID, Driving licence Passport
  5. Address Proof – Aadhaar card, Pan Card and Voter ID
  6. Photographs of couples (Joint Photo of bride and groom)
  7. Wedding Card (Marriage invitation letter)
  8. Witness Photographs – Two witnesses

D) The process for marriage registration in UP

The process of marriage registration in UP is fairly easy but it takes about a month or more for you to finally get your marriage registered and receive the marriage certificate.

  1. The first step is to apply at the sub-registrar office in your jurisdiction. The jurisdiction can be your place of residence for 6 months or more and the venue where your wedding took place. In case of special marriage act, a 30-day notice needs to be given to the sub-registrar office prior to applying.
  2. Next, you have to fill the forms properly and submit all the above-mentioned documents with it. These documents need to be attested by a gazetted officer.
  3. Once you have completed the procedure of documenting, you need to fill a fee of ₹ 100 in case of Hindu Marriage Act and ₹ 150 under Special Marriage Act. In case of emergencies, a ‘tatkal provision’ exists to get your marriage certificate in a day or two for ₹ 10,000!
  4. The sub-registrar then gives you an appointment, which is usually after 15 days if you’re registering under the Hindu Marriage Act and 60 days under Special Marriage Act. During this period, you will get receive a notice from the registrar’s office that details of your wedding are public. If anyone objects to your nuptials after seeing it, a meeting is a set-up between both the parties.
  5. After all the formalities are completed and approved in the process of marriage registration in UP, you go to the sub-registrar’s office to sign the registrar. You both a need witness each, preferably someone who attended the wedding (mandatory under Hindu Marriage Act), who needs to carry the identity and residential proof with them.

After all these steps, you receive your marriage certificate in a day or two. This process of marriage registration in UP is compulsory for every married couple to go through to receive their marriage certificate!
