There are famous fables behind this day as according to Hindu mythology this is an auspicious day when Lord Krishna visited his sister, Subhadra after killing the demon Narkasur. Her sister gave a warm welcome to him and made the occasion special by especially welcoming him. Subhadra also applied the ceremonial "tilak" on the forehead of her brother, Krishna, and hence the festival of "Bhai Dooj" started then. Another story of Yama, the God of Death, and his sister the Yamuna. It is believed that he met his sister on Dwitheya, the second day after the new moon. After this meeting - the occasion began to be celebrated as "Yamadwitheya" or "Yamadvitiya".

Sister invites brother on this day and then she prepares some sweets for her brother. She puts tilak on his brother’s forehead with some rice and saffron bits and then she prays to almighty for her brother’s long, healthy and wealthy life.
