The festival of Lohri is celebrated across India to commemorate the Rabi crop harvest. It is a very auspicious festival specifically for Punjabis and is celebrated with pomp and show all across Punjab, and parts of Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Delhi. The festival also falls on the day before the start of the Magh season and thus marks the beginning of it.

Lohri is celebrated to show respect and gratitude to God for an abundant harvest. On the evening of Lohri, a ceremonial bonfire is lit and fed with Prasaad. Traditionally, the festival also marks the onset of spring and coincides with other festivals celebrated across India like Makar Sakranti, Pongal and Bhogali Bihu. The 2023 Lohri date is January 13th, which is a Friday.

Why We Celebrate Lohri

The auspicious festival of Lohri is celebrated for various reasons. One of the reasons is that it marks the end of the cold winter days and the coming of spring and warmer days. It is also known as a time of rejuvenation especially for Punjabis as winter signifies death and decay. People celebrate the end of the dreading cold days and a beginning of a new year and better days on Lohri.

Another important reason why Lohri is celebrated is to honour the goddess of fertility, Lohri Mata. It is said that Lohri Mata blesses couples with children at this time and it is thus considered a very important and auspicious festival for newly married couples. Another major reason why Lohri is celebrated is that it marks the end of the crop season. In many regions of India, the Rabi crop is harvested at this time and Lohri is celebrated to thank the Gods for the plentiful crops. Farmers celebrate their hard work of the season and thank the lord for their crops.

Lohri Celebration in India

Lohri is celebrated in various parts of India. The festival is celebrated with the most pomp and show in Punjab. On Lohri, people light a bonfire in the evening which is known as the Lohri fire. The Lohri fire is believed to be purifying and auspicious and people gather around it to sing and dance during the evening. Various gifts and sweets are exchanged among people and their loved ones. Some of the most common sweets among these are Gajak, Til Laddoo and Rewri. Sweets like these made from jaggery and Til are also offered to the Lohri fire. Farmers producing Rabi crops mostly in Punjab also offer their first harvest to the Lohri fire and pray for a successful harvest season.

Another very important part of the Lohri festival is the Folk songs that are sung around the Lohri fire. People gather and sing traditional folk songs of fertility, prosperity and harvest season. People also sing songs of Dulla Bhatti a Punjabi folk hero who is known for his bravery in protecting the poor. A dance called “Dulla Bhatti da Kikar” is also performed around the Lohri fire as a tribute to the local hero.
