Think of any typical North Indian marriage and the first thing that comes to your mind is the beautiful Mehndi ceremony, the festive Haldi ritual and of course the big day itself, in all its glory. But the celebrations don't just stop there. Even after the extravaganza of your wedding is over, thanks to our many festivals and rituals - as a newlywed bride, you can expect a zillion more days of celebration and festivities where you are going to be the star of the show.

And talking of you being the star of the show, if there is one festival that is tailor-made to put you into the limelight - it is the Karwa Chauth. Keeping a fast from Sunrise to Moonrise for the health and well-being of your spouse, though romantic, it is a daunting task nonetheless. And it doesn't help when you have to do it surrounded by temptations, and people who just can't relate.

Yes, we are talking about observing the first-ever Karwa Chauth while at work. While the seasoned wives know very well how to juggle the hunger pangs with the work, but for a newbie, it might seem a little too much to start with.

While we are sure that the ritualistic dos and don'ts would be taken care of by your moms and mother-in-law, there are certain challenges they might not have thought about. We are here to prepare you for the modern-day challenges that you might have to face at your workplace owing to the modern-day lifestyle and workplace culture.

So to prepare you for the big day, here is our list of the code of conduct that will help you swerve away from the path of provocation and do's and don'ts of food around Karwa Chauth so that you are fully prepared for your fast!

Proteins And Fibres Are Your Best Friends

We all know the importance of a balanced diet but when it comes to fasting for a long period of time, you need to play it smart. Eating lots of protein and fibre rich food during your Sargi will go a long way in keeping you fuller throughout the day. Nuts such as cashews, almonds and raisins and dairy products are a good source of protein for you.

Additionally, make sure your Sargi Thali also has a good collection of fruits of your choice. They will also give you the energy to last through the day without eating or drinking.

Sweet And Fried Stuff Is A No Go

Traditionally, the Sargi prepared for Karwa Chauth is full of fried items like Puris and Pakoras, and sweets. Though these may give you an instant energy kick, they will slow you down during the day. Additionally, fried food will also lead to acidity when your stomach is empty for a long time.

So opt for a multi-grain chapati instead of Puri and so on. If you have a  sweet tooth and would still want a dessert as part of your Sargi, go for Dates or Figs to keep those cravings at a low.

Do Not, We Repeat Do Not Look At Buzzfeedtasty Videos Or Quizzes

We have all been guilty of watching (and saving for later), the food prep videos on Tasty's Facebook and Instagram handles. Well, doing so might prove fatal when you are expected to go without food or water (much less extravagant delicacies). So for your sake and your peace-of-mind - Don't.

'Tell us your favourite pizza topping and we will tell you which Harry Potter character are you?' Sounds familiar? Taking BuzzFeed Food quizzes is the procrastination-of-choice for a lot of us millennials. So be extra cautious that in your attempt to distract yourself from the thoughts of food, you don't end up in the web of these quizzes.

Don't Pay Heed To The Siren Call Of Food Delivery Apps

Snapsoul

One stray pop-up from your favourite food delivery app can be the trigger that makes you spiral into daydreams of food and desserts and whatnots. So do yourself a favour and mute/block all the notifications from apps that keep trying to get your attention and order food.

No matter how lucrative that Combo-deal sounds, do not go looking for that pizza coupon. The deals and the offers can wait, this day will not come again for another year. A little patience and restraint never hurt anyone.

Stay Away From The Pantry And/or Enthusiastic Coworkers

Is your workplace one of those where people bond over their love for food and share the deets on the most awesome food places around the town. Well, that is an amazing place to be - on all days of the year other than this one. So, just for that one day stay away from those pantry-conversations, and the truckloads of mouth-watering moments.

Staying Focused On Work Can Be Hard But That's Your Best Bet Honey

Do we even need to say anything here? Trying to pass a lunch-less day by pinning your hopes on a stupendous dinner might backfire sooner than you think. So the safer option is to think of better, less risky distractions.

Working, on an empty stomach and after coffee-less morning? That sure seems hard. But sadly, this is the best thing for you to do on a day when thinking of anything other than spreadsheets and presentations can lead you astray.

Get Reinforcements

If things still seem to be going too hard, it's time for you to get in some reinforcements. Get your girl gang to help you out. This is part of their duties as your Bridesmaids - cause these duties are not just for the day of the wedding. Ask them to help you stay distracted, be it in the form of playlists, listicle recommendations (like this one right here) or the best of all- MEMES!

Husband Dearest To The Rescue

Since the prime benefactor (in terms of a long and healthy) life is your better half, don't hesitate to ring him up every time you feel like things are getting a bit too out of hard for you. We understand that constant Whatsapp messages and calls might not seem too professional, but it is allowed on this one day of the month.

Opening Your Fast With The Right Ingredients Is Crucial

Our modern-day lifestyle has made sure we are all caffeine-dependent in our day to day proceedings. It is highly likely that you'd crave your favourite fix tea/coffee when you finally open your fast. Don't. Caffeine will increase the acidity in your body. Go for fresh juice instead and lighter meals rather than something heavy that might be too much for your stomach to process all at once.

Hope this list keeps you occupied enough so you don't overthink and worry about your very first Karwa Chauth ever. Remember, as much as the tradition is sacred, it is more about the thought behind it and the love you have for your husband. So don't worry about the what if's and focus on enjoying yourself to the fullest (on a half-empty stomach). You go, girl!!!
